21st TSC #SoldierSpotlight: Jennifer Hug, Pharmacist and Reservist

IF YOU’VE BEEN TO THE OUTPATIENT PHARMACY
AT LANDSTUHL REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER, YOU WERE PROBABLY GREETED BY MS. JENNIFER HUG. HER FORMAL TITLE IS PHARMACY SUPERVISOR. BUT, HER PHARMACY TECHNICIANS KNOW HER AS,
MOM. “I’M CONCERNED ABOUT THEM WHEN THEY’RE HERE
WORKING AND WHEN THEY’RE NOT. AND, SOMETIMES THEY MAY NOT KNOW IT, BUT I’M KEEPING TABS
ON THEM. THEY’RE JUST VERY REFRESHING, THEY’RE YOUNG
KIDS, THEY’VE GOT SO MUCH TALENT.” MS. HUG’S LONG ROAD TO BECOME A PHARMACIST STARTED
WITH SOME MOTHERLY INSPIRATION FROM HER MOM. “MY MOTHER WAS, UM, QUITE INFLUENTIAL AND
SO I WAS GOING TO COLLEGE. AND I THOUGHT, WOW I KIND OF LIKE COLLEGE. I THINK MAYBE I’LL CHANGE MY MAJOR SO THAT
I CAN STAY IN COLLEGE A LITTLE LONGER. AND I ENDED UP GOING TO PHARMACY SCHOOL, WHICH
WAS A GOOD FIT FOR ME.” PHARMACY MOM IS ONLY HALF OF HER JOB. ONE WEEKEND A MONTH, AND SOMETIMES MORE, SHE
TRADES HER LABCOAT FOR AN ARMY UNIFORM. IN THE RESERVES, SHE IS COL HUG, THE COMMAND
SURGEON WITH THE 7TH MISSION SUPPORT COMMAND. WHERE SOLDIERS ENJOY HER MOTHERLY PERSONALITY. “IT’S REALLY NICE TO HAVE A, HI MA’AM HOW
ARE YOU? HEY SGT HODGE, HOW ARE YOU? GREAT, HOW ARE THINGS? BIG GENUINE SMILE AND SHE SEEMS REALLY HAPPY
TO BE AROUND US AND GET TO HANG OUT WITH US.” COL HUG ENJOYS THE OPPURTUNITY TO MENTOR SOLDIERS
BOTH AT THE PHARMACY AND IN THE RESERVES. “I THINK ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS
AS A MENTOR, ESPECIALLY FOR OUR YOUNGER SOLDIERS IS TO JUST TALK TO THEM ABOUT, HEY, WHAT ARE
YOU GONNA DO A YEAR FROM NOW, 2 YEARS FROM NOW, 3 YEARS FROM NOW. YOU KNOW, ALL THE POSSIBILITIES THAT ARE AVAILABLE,
UM, IN THE ARMY RESERVE.” COL HUG IS EMPOWERING OUR JUNIOR LEADERS AS
A PHARMACIST AND SOLDIER. IN KAISERSLAUTERN, I’M STAFF SERGEANT ADRIAN
PATOKA.
