Pink Eye | Symptoms & Treatment

Hi, I’m Dr. John Shufeldt, the founder and
CEO of MeMD. Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is
one of the most common and treatable eye conditions in children and adults; and occurs when there
is an inflammation of the thin tissue that lines the inside of the eyelid. Conjunctivitis may occur from bacteria, allergies,
or a virus. Symptoms for pinkeye include redness of the
eye, discharge from the eye, excessive tearing, fever, burning or itchy eyes, and blurred
vision. Pink eye symptoms can vary between patients
– however, if you are experiencing a range of these symptoms, consider consulting a doctor. Conjunctivitis is a common condition for which
patients request online consultations. During an online consult with one of MeMD’s
board-certified medical providers, you will be asked a series of targeted questions. Be
sure to discuss any past treatments you have received for Pink eye. If you have any documents you would like to
share, please upload them to your chart. Taking these steps helps ensure you are treated appropriately
and safely. Your medical provider may ask you to shine
a light on your eye. They may also ask a series of questions to determine if the cause is
bacterial, or viral, or allergic. They will then discuss their diagnosis, and the risks
and benefits of various treatments. Depending on the cause and severity, your
treatment plan may include a combination of prescription and over-the-counter medications.
These can be eprescribed through MeMD. Your doctor may also discuss the advantages and
disadvantages of an in-person examination. Please note, more detailed vision testing,
testing of eye pressure, and cultures of the eye discharge cannot be performed online and
may require in-person evaluation. Thank you for your interest in MeMD, we look
forward to helping you with your healthcare needs – whenever and wherever!
